The second day of the Festival started with a screening of two documentary films Rock Monologue directed by Vladimir Kozlov and Melody for German directed by Ivan Bolotnikov. Rock Monologue is a portrait of Yury Morozov, one of the creators of Russian rock music in the 1980s. Melody for German is a documentary about one of the greatest living film directors, Alexei German. These films, dedicated to two important men from St Petersburg, was followed by a UK premiere of Nirvana, a debut film by Igor Voloshin, starring Maria Shalaeva and Olga Sutulova. To describe the visual impact of this beautiful film we will cite again the Empire film review: the visuals matter much more than the content of this cyberpunk dysfantasia, with Pavel Parkhomenko's garish production design, Nadezhda Vasiliyeva's outré costumes and Anna Essmont's glam-kitsch make-up being bathed in a retro-futuristic sheen by Dmitri Yashonkov's lapidary cinematography! |
