Day 13: 5 mm. long
Indoors breeding (actually it's in my bedroom!)
How do you remove the eggs?
The eggs will be STUCK on the plants real hard. You remove them gently with your fingertips. It's a bit hard at first until you figure out the exact power and pressure needed to remove an egg from the plant. You will break few eggs at first but eventually you'll get it right.
Do you use the same water in the tank?
You don't have to use the same water of the tank especially if the water was not clean. The only reason for you to use the same water in the tank is to have the same water temperature but if you had water in the same room temperature it is ok for you to use it.
Do you need to feed the fry?
You don't have to feed the eggs and when the eggs hatch the fry will eat their eggs because it's very healthy for their immune system and growth. After 3 days you can start feeding the fry with fry food 6 times a day. The food is available at the pet store.
What are white eggs and transparent eggs?
After you collect all the eggs and put them in a different container, they will all look transparent in color. After the first day, some of the eggs will turn white. That is due to being unfertilized. The unfertilized eggs are most likely to get fungus and that's why they turn white. The fungus will infect the healthy eggs (fertilized eggs) if you didn't throw the white eggs out as soon as possible.
The easiest way to do that is to have the eggs in a flat container with a black sheet of paper beneath it or anything else that could give you a dark background to see the white eggs easily.
**White eggs: are infected with fungus.
**Transparent eggs: are healthy eggs (fertilized eggs).
What kind of breeding tank do you need for breeding?
The one I have is 50(width) x30(deep) x35(height) in cm. The tank is made of glass with artificial plants made of silk. The plants are very important for the breeding.
How do you sex goldfish?
It's not that easy really but once you get it you'll always know. The male is smaller in size although this is not the perfect way to indicate a male. When it's time for breeding the male will get tiny white dots, like bobbles, on its cheeks. Its front fins will also have white edges, also tiny dots but they look different than the ones on its cheeks. The female usually has a belly and it looks bigger in size.
Do you need a heater?
The tank should have the same water of the parents' tank. WHY? Because the same room temperature water is required. An oxygen pump is also very important. I never really needed a heater for my fry. Maybe it's because my room is always warm. But I'll suggest a heater for you if your room is cold.
What kind of filter do you need for a fry tank?
I bought a very weak filter for my fry but I was too afraid to use it with my tiny babies. I tried it for less than an hour and some of them got stuck in it. So, I removed it immediately and rescued them! I lived cleaning the water every 3-4 days with an eyedropper. At least I know they're all fine.
Do you need to change the tank water?
I have 2 baby tanks for my babies. So, when I decide on changing the water I usually switch them to the other one. HOW DO I DO THAT! I use a small plastic measuring cup. I place it on the water and once I go down and the water starts coming in I catch them. WHY DON'T I USE A NET? Well, it's because it hurts their fins and they also stick to it very badly which makes it even harder for me to pick them with my fingertips.
When can you move the fry to a bigger tank?
I read once about goldfish that they grow in size according to the size of the place they're in. So, if you want your goldfish to grow bigger in size you have to switch to a bigger tank and feed them well. When the eggs hatched and the fry grew bigger, I just felt it's time to move them to a bigger container. Because the tank looked very crowded and they needed more space to swim.
What is the difference in feeding goldfish fry and other kinds of fish fry?
Goldfish normally lay eggs but other kinds of fish may give birth. If you have fish that lay eggs then wait for the eggs to hatch. After they hatch, do not feed them anything for 3 days because the fry will start to eat their egg sack and it is very healthy for their immune system and growth. After that, start to feed them "powder fry food". It's available at the pet store. If your fish normally give birth then start feeding them fry food 6 times daily.
Why do my fry fish die?
Fry normally die in early stages. They don't all live until the stage where they are mature. You can only try your best to minimize the number of death by taking good care of them and providing them with everything that is necessary for them.
